Cricut Design Space Updates March 2022

update cricut design space

Use the offset feature on the desktop app to create decorative outlines to shapes, text, or groups of objects to make your designs pop. This popular design technique adds a professional touch to custom stickers, cake toppers, T-shirt designs, and more. I’m excited about this first April update, and that is the addition of a guide layer to Cricut Design Space. If you want to make notes on your project for yourself or someone else (using the sharing feature), you can use the Operation Dropdown to make a Guide layer. A notification bell has been added so you can see when people follow your Cricut Community profile.

So if almost exclusively use Smart Materials, for example, you can now select Without a Mat as the default setting. You’ll notice that the old icons for rotating, locking, and resizing at the corners of the bounding box are now gone. Bounding boxes are the box around the item you’re working on in Cricut Design Space (a text or image). Another more minor update to Cricut Design Space is the ability to add a banner to your Cricut Community profile. Just go to your profile by going to the top left and clicking your avatar and selecting View Profile.

Checking Your Software Version

These changes bring Design Space more in line with other graphic design software. Additionally there is an improvement when reporting images for copyright or other violations. If you select “other,” there’s a box for you to write your reason for reporting the image. This update is for the images in the Cricut Image Library. If you have Access, the number will be gray and crossed out. And if you’ve previously purchased it al la carte, it will say Purchased.

September 2022 Cricut Design Space Updates (v7.

There have been a lot of changes to Cricut Design Space in 2022. These exciting new changes are a game-changer when it comes to making your next project. Then when I go to the Bookmarks tab at the top, I’ll only see the fonts I’ve bookmarked. This update is all small glitch fixes—there are no bigger updates that you should notice. Now an alert will notify users if their computer doesn’t meet the system requirement of having at least 4GB of available RAM. Now when you choose to restore areas of your image during upload, we show you a shadow of the restore area to better assist you with image restoration.

Introducing Create Sticker in Design Space

In this example, you can see the corner of the wood bed frame. There are also updates to the Layers Panel in Design Space to support the new tools, including the ability to rename your layers by right-clicking. The height and width is now displayed along with the bounding box. It will also show your rotational degrees as you rotate your object. Cricut Design Space is updated every so often with new features.

Transform your creative making with Warp from Cricut Design Space

Creating the best possible Design Space experience for our members remains a significant focus for our team. Hearing and understanding your feedback is crucial because it helps us make improvements and bring you new features that matter to you. For that, we say thank you, and please keep sharing with us. The 7.8 updates increases the size of Cricut Print then Cut. Before, the largest paper you could use with Print then Cut was 8.5″ x 11″, but this update adds A4 paper, which is 8.3″ x 11.7″. This is helpful for places where A4 is the standard paper size, but it doesn’t increase the size of the Print then Cut area by much.

We have many more improved and new features coming to Design Space. Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for you to make your incredible creations. Improvements to fonts and design tools are imminent, so keep checking our social channels for more news. Second, Cricut improved the Print then Cut capabilities in the Prepare screen to match how other operation types appear in that screen. You can now rotate, move, and hide Print then Cut objects.

Additionally, there’s now a yearly option for Cricut Access. As of the writing of this update, the yearly subscription works out to $7.99 per month, saving you $2 a month over the monthly price. There are some other good smaller updates too, like the ability to sort searches by most recent, and that fonts come up when you search keywords on the Home page. Note that this does NOT apply to your system fonts, just Cricut fonts. Second, they’ve changed the way that bookmarked materials appear in the Make Screen when you select your materials. Instead of a star, it’s now a green bookmark to be consistent with the rest of Design Space.

These are images where you can edit the text to completely personalize them. Because this is a big update, I created a video and a post so you can learn how this new tool works. You can watch my video about Cricut Editable Images or read about them in my post Editable Images in Cricut Design Space. Calibrate your machine right after an update as your calibration settings will not carry over into the latest update.

To do this, head to your settings then select ‘Load Type’ here you can select your options in the drop-down. If you make the text box bigger, you can then choose where in the text box you want your text to live in the Alignment dropdown at the top. In this case, I made the text box larger and chose right alignment. In the March 2022 update, I said I didn’t have text wrapping even though that was part of the update. Turns out, it looks like they took that functionality away! If you are having software or plugin issues, reach out to Cricut Support.

When you select the image layer again, the grid lines will reappear. In-app notifications are now available in Design Space for desktop! This means that you can start engaging with your favourite makers in Design Space like never before. You will now be notified of new followers and when fellow community members like your project! The list is interactive – you can Follow/Unfollow right from that list or navigate to a user’s profile. To start, you can now select a “load default” in the settings (use the menu in the upper left to access the settings).

Then do a test print then cut of your project using plain printer paper. Lastly, your “My Stuff,” which contains all your bookmarks, projects and uploads, is now easily accessible from the left menu of the Home page. The hamburger menu ≡ has been updated and now all your account information lives on the right side of the screen. This will be the one stop shop for all account information and settings. This menu includes where to update your profile, change your notifications, new product set up, calibration and Help.

They are now more specific based on the type of action a user took on your profile. Additionally, there were some updates to Cricut profile pages and the way that Cricut contributor badges are shown. Additionally, there’s a new and improved font picker (yay!). The interface is a bit different, but the best part is the “Recent Fonts” tab, which allows you to easily see fonts you’ve recently used. Cricut Design Space can be installed on your Windows or Mac computer or as an app on your iOS or Android device. Check the minimum recommended system requirements to ensure your device will support the Cricut Design Space software.

From there, you can click the pencil symbol at the top of the banner and upload your own image. I’ve been wanting a bookmarking feature for fonts for years, and they finally released it. This works for both Cricut and system fonts, though the system font bookmarking won’t save from device to device. When buying images or fonts within Cricut Design Space, there’s now a box that pops up to show the benefits of using Cricut Access.

This post will help explain the more important features of each update. This is the pop-up that you will see when you open to Design Space after it updates. Design Space updates are rolled out to users gradually, and updates are automatic. Our team is always working on ways to provide a more enjoyable experience for our members, which means adding a few things that will help create a better workflow. Sometimes it can be the simplest features that provide the most efficient creative experience. This blog post was updated on March 16, 2021, to reflect changes, as notified to customers by way of e-mail on that day in this Letter to the Cricut community.

Below is a preview of all that is new (or coming soon) to Design Space — including exciting new features like Offset (yes!) and project Collections. We have lots of exciting features coming; this is just the beginning. Personalise items with greater ease than ever with the new Monogram Maker! The Fall of the House of Usher: Limited Series

More specifically, the property is situated in the suburbs of Alpharetta, Georgia (One of the Atlanta Area’s richest neighborhoods) in an exclusive guard-gated gold community. The fantastic design elements of the house make it seem as if it’s just jumped out of the covers of a popular interior magazine hotel. Not one to shy away from the conventionally accepted norms, Usher’s home features a foyer and master bedroom with black walls. Interestingly, designers now consider black to be all the rage because of it’s uniquely dark yet stylistic elements. The formal dining room is quite colorful with shades of deep purple, fine curtains, floral print wallpapers and valances. Usher also currently maintains a 10,823-square-foot mansion in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Meet the Cursed Kin of ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ Cast

What was it—I paused to think—what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher? It was a mystery all insoluble; nor could I grapple with the shadowy fancies that crowded upon me as I pondered. I was forced to fall back upon the unsatisfactory conclusion, that while, beyond doubt, there are combinations of very simple natural objects which have the power of thus affecting us, still the analysis of this power lies among considerations beyond our depth.

In film and television

Surely, man had never before so terribly altered, in so brief a period, as had Roderick Usher! It was with difficulty that I could bring myself to admit the identity of the wan being before me with the companion of my early boyhood. And now in the mere exaggeration of the prevailing character of these features, and of the expression they were wont to convey, lay so much of change that I doubted to whom I spoke. The now ghastly pallor of the skin, and the now miraculous lustre of the eve, above all things startled and even awed me. The silken hair, too, had been suffered to grow all unheeded, and as, in its wild gossamer texture, it floated rather than fell about the face, I could not, even with effort, connect its Arabesque expression with any idea of simple humanity.

Cast and characters

One of the phantasmagoric conceptions of my friend, partaking not so rigidly of the spirit of abstraction, may be shadowed forth, although feebly, in words. A small picture presented the interior of an immensely long and rectangular vault or tunnel, with low walls, smooth, white, and without interruption or device. Certain accessory points of the design served well to convey the idea that this excavation lay at an exceeding depth below the surface of the earth. No outlet was observed in any portion of its vast extent, and no torch, or other artificial source of light was discernible; yet a flood of intense rays rolled throughout, and bathed the whole in a ghastly and inappropriate splendour. “Her decease,” he said, with a bitterness which I can never forget, “would leave him (him the hopeless and the frail) the last of the ancient race of the Ushers.” While he spoke, the lady Madeline (for so was she called) passed slowly through a remote portion of the apartment, and, without having noticed my presence, disappeared. I regarded her with an utter astonishment not unmingled with dread—and yet I found it impossible to account for such feelings.

The chef’s kitchen area landscape is laden with a white marble backsplash, a couple of Viking utilities, a built-in banquet and gray cabinets to boot. The living room has dark wood floors, a tiled fireside and stenciled wooden beams. The house was built in 1926 and features a five-bedroom setup, six bathrooms and a couple of decent finishes.

An irrepressible tremour gradually pervaded my frame; and, at length, there sat upon my very heart an incubus of utterly causeless alarm. Shaking this off with a gasp and a struggle, I uplifted myself upon the pillows, and, peering earnestly within the intense darkness of the chamber, hearkened—I know not why, except that an instinctive spirit prompted me—to certain low and indefinite sounds which came, through the pauses of the storm, at long intervals, I knew not whence. Overpowered by an intense sentiment of horror, unaccountable yet unendurable, I threw on my clothes with haste (for I felt that I should sleep no more during the night), and endeavoured to arouse myself from the pitiable condition into which I had fallen, by pacing rapidly to and fro through the apartment. The worldly reason, however, assigned for this singular proceeding, was one which I did not feel at liberty to dispute. The brother had been led to his resolution (so he told me) by consideration of the unusual character of the malady of the deceased, of certain obtrusive and eager inquiries on the part of her medical men, and of the remote and exposed situation of the burial-ground of the family. I will not deny that when I called to mind the sinister countenance of the person whom I met upon the staircase, on the day of my arrival at the house, I had no desire to oppose what I regarded as at best but a harmless, and by no means an unnatural, precaution.

However, Flanagan is smart enough to shift the Poe narratives ever so slightly for a modern audience. His version of The Tell-Tale Heart is a modern gem, and “The Gold-Bug” is reimagined as a new brand for the Usher company. But the themes remain the same—guilt, obsession, vengeance, and a supernatural sense of justice. Roderick Usher’s children are getting what they deserve, not merely because they are the fruit of a very poisoned tree but because they have made horrific decisions to stay in the shelter of wealth and privilege.

La Chute de la maison Usher is a 1928 silent French horror film directed by Jean Epstein starring Marguerite Gance, Jean Debucourt, and Charles Lamy. Like Madeline, Roderick is connected to the mansion, the titular House of Usher. He believes the mansion is sentient and responsible, in part, for his deteriorating mental health and melancholy. Despite this admission, Usher remains in the mansion and composes art containing the Usher mansion or similar haunted mansions. His mental health deteriorates faster as he begins to hear Madeline's attempts to escape the underground vault she was buried in, and he eventually meets his death out of fear in a manner similar to the House of Usher's cracking and sinking.

While the details are unclear, there is a pact between Madeline, Roderick, and Verna that seemingly involves death. Madeline attempts to alter the terms of their agreement, even resorting to violence, but Verna proves to be resilient. The situation leaves Madeline pondering the cryptic words of their contract, suggesting that death is an integral part of their deal.Meanwhile, Frederick, another Usher family member, manipulates the situation to position himself for the CEO position within Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. He subjects his wife, Morelle, to further torment and disfigurement, crossing the line even for Verna. In an unexpected turn of events, Verna ensures Frederick's demise by lacing his cocaine with a paralyzing drug.

On the other hand, there are plenty of strange things about the Usher family. For one, “the entire family lay in the direct line of descent,” meaning that only one son from each generation survived and reproduced. Poe implies incestuous relations sustained the genetic line and that Roderick and Madeline are the products of extensive intermarriage within the Usher family.

The Fall of the House of Usher Summary, Characters, Themes, & Facts

fall of house of usher

The Fall of the House of Usher is a haunted house of a show filled with the ghosts of Mike Flanagan’s past casts. You’ll recognize a number of famous faces from projects like The Midnight Club, Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Haunting of Hill House, and more in this wicked horror series based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The Fall of the House of Usher is an American gothic horror drama television miniseries created by Mike Flanagan. All eight episodes were released on Netflix on October 12, 2023, each directed by either Flanagan or Michael Fimognari, with the latter also acting as cinematographer for the entire series. The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe.

Learning at Los Angeles

At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical. Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed. The story explicitly ties the physical House of Usher to the Usher lineage, stating that the peasants in that domain use the phrase “House of Usher” for both. However, the connection between the house and the family runs deeper than linguistic shorthand.

Plot

Alongside his favoured players is Mark Hamill as an unfeeling lawyer/fixer for the Usher family who sounds as if he gargles a pint of nails every morning. But as we know from the start, there’s no point in getting overly attached to them, as grisly fates are assured for all. It’s not so much the “what” as the “why” that the audience and Dupin need to be answered. The story features numerous allusions to other works of literature, including the poems “The Haunted Palace” and “Mad Trist” by Sir Launcelot Canning. Poe composed them himself and then fictitiously attributed them to other sources.

His mental health deteriorates faster as he begins to hear Madeline's attempts to escape the underground vault she was buried in, and he eventually meets his death out of fear in a manner similar to the House of Usher's cracking and sinking. Fearing that her body will be exhumed for medical study, Roderick insists that she be entombed for two weeks in the family tomb located in the house before being permanently buried. The narrator helps Roderick put Madeline's body in the tomb, whereupon the narrator realizes that Madeline and Roderick are twins. The narrator also notes that Madeline's body has rosy cheeks, which sometimes happens after death. Over the next week, both Roderick and the narrator find themselves increasingly agitated.

Accordingly, commentaries on social injustice, morality, and utilitarianism proliferated in the mid-19th century. Poe conceived of his writing as a response to the literary conventions of this period. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” he deliberately subverts convention by rejecting the typical practices of preaching or moralizing and instead focusing on affect and unity of atmosphere. The Fall of the House of Usher, supernatural horror story by Edgar Allan Poe, published in Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine in 1839 and issued in Poe’s Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque (1840). In 2002, Ken Russell produced a horror comedy version titles The Fall of the Louse of Usher.

The narrator observes that the house seems to have absorbed an evil and diseased atmosphere from the decaying trees and murky ponds around it. He notes that although the house is decaying in places—individual stones are disintegrating, for example—the structure itself is fairly solid. There is only a small crack from the roof to the ground in the front of the building. He has come to the house because his friend Roderick sent him a letter earnestly requesting his company. Roderick wrote that he was feeling physically and emotionally ill, so the narrator is rushing to his assistance.

In a shocking development, Madeline breaks out of her coffin and enters the room, and Roderick confesses that he buried her alive. Madeline attacks her brother and kills both him and herself in the struggle, and the narrator flees the house. It is a stormy night, and as he leaves he sees the house fall down, collapsing into the lake which reflects the house’s image. Roderick grows more erratic in his behaviour, and the narrator reads to his friend to try to soothe him.

The symbol which represents the secret – Madeline herself – is hidden away by Roderick, but that symbol returns, coming to light at the end of the story and (in good Gothic fashion) destroying the family for good. The story is narrated by a childhood friend of Roderick Usher, the owner of the Usher mansion. This friend is riding to the house, having been summoned by Roderick Usher, having complained in his letter that he is suffering from some illness and expressing a hope that seeing his old friend will lift his spirits.

The story concerns the narrator’s visit to a strange mansion owned by his childhood friend, who is behaving increasingly oddly as he and his twin sister dwell within the ‘melancholy’ atmosphere of the house. “The Fall of the House of Usher” updates the work of Edgar Allan Poe for the era of Big Pharma, turning his most famous tales into a sprawling story of the decline of a wealthy American family. It’s “Succession” meets The Tell-Tale Heart, a story of vengeance, power, betrayal, and bloody parts.

The peasantry confuses the mansion with the family because the physical structure has effectively dictated the genetic patterns of the family. English majors will likely know where some of the stories are going just by seeing the episode names. When the young and trendy Prospero Usher (Sauriyan Sapkota) decides to host an exclusive sex-and-drugs party at one of dad’s old factories in an abbey, readers of The Masque of the Red Death will know it’s going to be a gruesome scene.

Roderick Usher is a gifted poet and artist, whose talents the narrator praises before sharing a poem Usher wrote, titled ‘The Haunted Palace’. The ballad concerns a royal palace which was once filled with joy and song, until ‘evil things’ attacked the king’s palace and made it a desolate shadow of what it once was. Roderick Usher is the patriarch of the Usher family and CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. After acquiring Fortunato with the help of his twin sister, Madeline, the Usher family has found success and wealth at the cost of the greater good. An ambitious and driven man, Roderick expects the most out of his six children, giving them access to every resource imaginable — except his fatherly affection.

SCE is introducing clean energy solutions for new-construction housing. We are now accepting applications for the New Home Energy Storage Pilot (NHESP). As a leader in whole house generators, our top-of-the-line Generac generators, along with our skilled technicians and electricians, effectively ensure that you’re never left in the dark. Meanwhile, the Champion Power Equipment’s 3500-watt Portable Generator weighs approximately 103 pounds. So, while you can take it with you if need be, this generator just doesn’t have the power to keep your HVAC system up and running in an emergency. Safety and convenience features include a low oil shutoff switch that protects the engine, a four-wheel design for easy movement and storage, and quiet power at 68 decibels.

Electric Start

With a home generator, you don’t have to fuel up during emergencies or run long extension cords in the middle of the night or in pouring rain. Instead, the generator will automatically kick on to immediately take over powering your home. You can remove three sides of the enclosure for easy installation, maintenance, and repair. Unfortunately, the battery cost isn’t included in the price, so you will have to purchase it separately. It has a multilingual LCD display to monitor generator status, check for any maintenance, and utility power presence.

We’re Committed to a Clean Energy Future

Many manufacturers extend coverages to include an additional year or two, while extended warranties of up to ten years are often available for purchase. The larger generators featured on our list are approximately 30 inches by 30 inches by 48 inches, while the smaller generators are closer to 24 inches by 24 inches by 36 inches. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code requires generators to be five feet or more away from openings such as doors and windows. Once you’ve figured out your power needs, the next two major considerations are the physical footprint of the generator and the amount of noise it makes. Whether you have a small yard or many acres of land, you’ll likely need the generator near your home, so the size and sound matter.

How big of a generator do you need to power your home?

The ATS automatically switches your home’s electrical panel from its connection to the grid to your generator when it detects a loss of power (this is also what can trigger some generators to automatically start). Before buying any generator, you should determine the power requirements of your home and your most essential large electric appliances. Refrigerators, air conditioning, sump or well pumps, medical devices, electric water heaters and portable space heaters will likely have the highest power draw and be most essential during power outages. Solar generators are also modestly sized portable generators simply because the technology needed to convert and store large amounts of power would require too much space.

Appliances

If, for example, you wanted to power a window air conditioning unit, your immersion water heater and a microwave, you’d need a generator with a 10,000-watt output to be safe. Assess your essential appliances and systems that need backup power during outages. This evaluation will help you determine the generator’s capacity that suits your needs without overspending. Whole house generators come in various sizes and capacities, each with a corresponding price range. Smaller generators that power essential circuits will typically be more budget-friendly than larger units that supply power to the entire house.

Size and Noise

Picking a generator depends mainly on the size of your home and what you wish to power. The average house will take at least 5,000 to 7,500 watts to run only the most critical equipment—think fridge, heat, and water. Often, a portable home generator can get you through an outage, but there are also options that are capable of powering your entire house. With the colder months approaching, we face the possibility of power outages that can last from hours to weeks. Investing in a standby generator is one of the best ways to keep your most important appliances up and running and help everyone inside stay a little more comfortable.

A heavy-duty standby generator with a high power capacity for blackouts. That depends on how often you lose power; on how quickly your power company takes to restore it; and, to a lesser degree, on your tolerance for living without power. If you lose power only occasionally, a portable generator is both less expensive and less convenient. The average 2,500 square foot house in the U.S. consumes close to 6,900 watts.

Best Reviews: Generac Guardian 3-Phase 20kW Automatic Standby

whole house generator

Portable generators are less expensive and take up less space on a property than whole-house generators—and they can be loaned to friends and family if they need a power boost. In some circumstances, though, there are clear benefits to choosing a whole-home generator instead. Powering a small home or RV with 3,000 to 4,000 watts is possible, but you will have to reduce your use of appliances and electronics.

If I don’t fit the program criteria, can I still get a home battery energy storage system?

And while noise may be the least of your worries in an emergency, this portable generator operates at a noise level of about 68 dBA—louder than a normal conversion and a tad quieter than a vacuum cleaner. These backup systems are typically powered by fuels (think natural or liquefied petroleum gas) to keep your home going during a blackout. "Most models start to work automatically, as soon as the home goes off the grid in an outage," explains Mark Dawson, the COO of Mister Sparky. You can also operate these units using natural gas from your gas line for unlimited fuel. These generators usually output between 5,000 and 520,000 watts and will cost between $6,000 and $11,000, including installation costs. All home generators with over 5,000-watt output are required to have an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS).

With the generator placed immediately outside of your home, you should also consider the noise level, measured in decibels (dB). Most generators on our list average 60 to 70 dBs, for reference, a vacuum cleaner is typically approximately 70 to 80 dBs. However, it isn’t allowed in all states in the United States, so you will have to check with your local repair shop if you can do it. To avoid the chances of it happening, you can instead install an automatic transfer switch. When it comes to the safety of delicate electronics, all the generators that we’ve included in the list are good.

Both LP and diesel fuels will require tanks large enough to run the generator correctly. Similarly, the natural gas meter and gas lines will need to be the correct size. Before installation, your contractor will verify this with you, but you can find this information in the installation manual on our product pages. Decisions about size, type, fuel, and other elements will help homeowners determine what the best whole-home generator option is for their home.

The PowerPact includes most of the same features as Generac’s larger models while requiring the smallest footprint of those we’ve ranked. Solar generators are the most environmentally-friendly option, but they're also the most expensive. Solar generators use solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity, and they can be used to power your home even when the sun isn't shining.

In an emergency situation, gas and propane may be hard to come by, but the power of the sun will always be there—and it’s unlimited. So, now that you’re looking for a solar-powered option, Jackery’s Explorer is an excellent choice. The price of a full-house generator can vary greatly, since everything from the cost of the system to the installation depends on your location, the machine's fuel type, and the quality of the system you purchase. When deciding if you should invest in a large capacity generator, consider how often your home loses power as well as what you stand to lose during long or frequent outages.

Unlike their smaller, portable cousins, home generators are permanently installed and connect directly to the home’s electrical circuits. Because of its smaller output, this Champion generator features the best average cost and the quietest noise level of all those generators on our list. But keep in mind that per watt, it isn’t performing any better than its competitors—all of which have higher outputs. It has a power output of 13kW and is durably built with an aluminum enclosure, which can withstand winds up to 180 MPH. You can either fuel it up with natural gas or liquid propane at your choice. The Cummins Power RS13A comes in both liquid propane and natural gas options, thus suitable for various households running on either type of fuel.

The process is similar to a hand-cranked flashlight but on a much larger scale. For the comfort of the homeowner, 10% of the total ranking went to noise level (dbA). Each generator’s noise level was evaluated and from there was scored based on the loudness (or softness) of its average level. Be sure to purchase the right type of generator for the fuel you’re looking to use, or check to see if it can be easily converted from one fuel source to the other (most can be). 【Expandable Emergency Power】 - Expandable 2016Wh capacity battery power station. Managing the load on your generator protects it from being overloaded by exceeding its capacity. When power from the grid initially fails, and the ATS turns on the generator, there may be too many items in the home calling for electricity. The load management device “sheds” the requests from low-priority devices while maintaining current to the more crucial systems and appliances. Home generators can be run by a variety of different fuel types, but all the ones on our list use either liquid propane (LP), natural gas (NG) or both. Those that can use both fuel types are easily converted, without tools, to be ready to burn whichever fuel is needed.

Home generator costs by size

Briggs & Stratton generators feature wireless monitoring, automatic low oil shutdown, and power management to control power distribution to select appliances and prevent overloads. Standby generator installation costs depend on the size, fuel source, distance from the electrical panel and gas meter, and amount of wiring and gas plumbing to hook up. They switch off the grid power and connect directly to several electrical circuit within the home to power the essential systems, appliances and several lights and outlets. If the starting watts are not listed, you can usually multiply the running watts by three.

Standby Generators Can Help You Weather Any Storm

If you decide to take the plunge for a whole-house generator, given your investment in installation, you’ll want a unit that performs well, which is where our ratings come in. You should expect to pay $1,500 at the least and $7,500 at the most, depending on the type of generator you need and the cost of labor in your area. Whether or not each generator offered an electric start feature gained or lost a generator points to amount to 5% of the total ranking. Each generator was evaluated based on whether or not it offered a load management option, which is a popular add-on for many generator inquirists. Whole house generators can run quite loudly (65 decibels on the low end to 69+ on the high end), so it’s important to take that range into consideration when purchasing and placing your generator.

How to Calculate How Big a Generator You Need to Prepare for an Emergency

The most common installation method is on a poured concrete pad, which offers reduced vibration and increased airflow and prevents pooling water from damaging or rusting the underside of the unit. Professional installation will run between $50 to $75 per square foot, including site preparation and concrete pouring. If your standby generator isn’t covered by your home warranty, you should ensure it comes with decent coverage for parts and labor in case something goes wrong. These engines turn rotors that convert mechanical energy into AC and DC electrical energy.

What’s the difference between a home standby generator and a whole-house generator?

Always check if a generator comes with an automatic low-oil shutoff, which shuts off the engine when oil levels drop below the minimum. Often people complain about generators being super loud, which is also one of the reasons why they don’t purchase one. Some generators make so much noise that it won’t let you sleep in the night. It can be horrifying if you have small children at home, you sleep better when it is completely silent. Owning a house without home insurance is a risky business even though it is a costly expense. When you install a whole house generator for your house, most insurance companies give you a discount because the risks attached to your home are less compared to their average model.

But depending on the heating and cooling systems, it can supply power to most of a smaller one. This generator is a great option if you want a power backup for a few necessities. Sure, it’s still an investment, but it comes with a five-year warranty that covers parts, labor, and travel. And it does automatic weekly power checks at a low RPM to ensure that it’s working correctly when you need it without using more fuel than is necessary. Home generators can be expensive to install, but they will last significantly longer than portable generators and will give you peace of mind that you and your family will be protected during power outages. Home generators have the largest power capacity of any type of non-industrial generator and are usually able to provide power to an entire home.

Partial generators run from $2,000 to $6,300, and most whole-house generators cost between $5,000 and $18,000. Whole-house generator installation costs are the highest because this type of generator can power an entire home. At a little over $6,500, this is one of the more expensive standby generators on our list, but it might be worth it if you want a reliable, high-powered backup generator with a good warranty. The main highlight of this whole-house generator is its multiple output options. It has two standard household outlets, two RV-ready outlets and a transfer switch. That means you can use it to power multiple devices at home or supply electricity to a small or medium-sized camper.

This dual-fuel model has a 6.6-gallon fuel tank that can be filled with gas or propane and produces 9,500 running watts. Because of its portability and multiple output options, this is a versatile generator that can be used for work, camping, construction, emergency power and more. This little guy only puts out 12,000 watts, so it may not be able to power an entire large house.

At Generator Supercenter, we are committed to providing our customers with the highest level of convenience and service around. We can provide you with the specific warranty and maintenance information your generator needs to run smoothly for years to come. It also has a robust 1.25-inch steel-tube cradle that protects the unit and covered outlets for added protection.

These are less expensive but are limited to powering a couple of lights and appliances—they will keep the most basic electrical items running but won’t power the whole home. About the size of a central air conditioning unit, they run on natural gas or propane, so they don’t need to be refueled as often either. Generac generators cost $2,000 to $5,000 for a 7 to 24 kW whole-house unit, plus $3,000 to $5,000 for installation.

Size options, as well as prices, may vary between these brands, so homeowners will want to find the unit that best fits their needs and budget. The starting costs of the best generator brands on the market are as follows. If you don’t need all the bells and whistles that come with some of the other standby generators on this list, this little 12.5-kW generator might be a good choice. It’s an affordable model built to withstand sub-zero temperatures and heavy rains.

When the Quiet-Test Self-Test Mode was performed on the generator, it recorded a lower RPM. You’ve it consuming less fuel compared to similar range products from other brands. Its Generac G-Force Engine is pressure-lubricated and built specifically for generator use because of which it requires less maintenance and servicing and is more reliable.

The Generac Guardian 3-Phase 20kW generator is one of the largest, most powerful air-cooled 3-phase generators on the market. If your home or small business needs dependable 3-phase power back-up look no further than this Generac Guardian. This generator has all the features you’ve come to love of a Generac, easy-installation, Wi-Fi control and monitoring, and durable, all-weather construction that’s built to last. With a noise level of 67 dbA, this unit’s noise is impressively low for the level of power output. The only thing missing from this package is an automatic transfer switch, which is sold separately.

Eligible items will have the Local Pickup option available both on the product page and in the cart. Please note that Local Pickup can only be scheduled online at this time. The nearest pickup location within a 50-mile radius is automatically chosen when you enter the site.

Most U.S. homes need at least 5,000 to 7,500 watts to cover minimum needs, so you’ll see standby generators offer nine to 20 kilowatts. Whole house generators will typically start at 22,000 watts and can run as high as almost 50,000. Automatic transfer switches offer effortless power restoration by detecting outages and facilitating a smooth switch to generator power. They’re particularly beneficial for those seeking a hands-off experience. On the other hand, manual transfer switches are more budget-friendly and necessitate manual intervention to redirect power. Inverter generators are similar to portable generators, but they're more efficient and produce cleaner power.

While the Champion 14-kW aXis generator is one of the most expensive whole house generators on our list, it includes excellent features to help it stand apart from its competition. Offering a best-in-class 14,000 watts, the Champion aXis goes unmatched on this list for the amount of power it outputs to your home. This generator is also the quietest of our top five with noise measured at only 62 dbA. As the leading home generator brand, Generac’s Guardian series generators, once again, set them apart from competition. Portable generators are less expensive than standby generators, but they're also less reliable.

MYRTLES PLANTATION" LEGENDS, LORE AND LIES

This happened several times, to the crew’s dismay, although they did manage to get the shots they needed. They added that the cast was happy to move on to another set once the filming at the Myrtles was completed. I am sure that after reading this story, even the most non-discerning readers have discovered a number of errors and problems with the tale.

Inside The Myrtles Plantation And The Story Of Its Haunting

Marshal sold the Myrtles Plantation to the New York Warehouse & Security Corporation. Mary Cobb employed William Drew Winter, the husband of her daughter Sarah Mulford, on December 5, 1865, as her agent and attorney to assist her in overseeing the plantation properties. She agreed to provide Sarah and William with the Myrtles Plantation as payment as part of the arrangement. The Myrtles Plantation and the Stirling family suffered due to the war itself.

the myrtles plantationlegends, lore and lies

The academy was apparently short-lived for in 1814, he joined Colonel Hide's cavalry regiment from the Feliciana Parish to fight alongside Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. When the War of 1812 had ended, Woodrooff returned to St. Francisville with the intention of studying law. And though Woodruff’s wife and children did die, they weren’t poisoned. According to this story, Winter’s ghost relives his last moments by loudly staggering through the house’s entrance and running up the stairs to the 17th step where he allegedly met his end. Many suggested that this might be the spirit of Chloe, which by this point had become a full-blown local legend.

Where is the Myrtles Plantation and What Happened There?

Up until this point, it was largely just a story that was passed on by word of mouth and it received little attention outside of the area. All of that changed when James and Frances Kermeen Myers passed through on a riverboat and decided to purchase the Myrtles. The house came furnished with period antiques and enough ghost stories to attract people from all over the country. Of nine children, only four of them lived to be old enough to marry. Daughter Sarah Mulford's husband was murdered on the front porch of the house after the Civil War.

Several of the tales that have been told about the location—mainly to explain the hauntings—have been proven false by history. They acknowledge that she existed, although she was never given a name.

She was buried next to her husband in the family plot at Grace Church in St. Francisville. There were a number of deaths in the house from yellow fever alone, and it's certainly possible that any of the deceased might have stayed behind after death. If ghosts stay behind in this world because of unfinished business, there are a number of candidates to be the restless ghosts of the plantation's stories. The house may really be haunted by the ghost of a woman in a green turban or bonnet. The Williams family had an ongoing tale about her and while it may have been a story that was never meant to be told outside the family, the story spread nonetheless. They admit that while the ghost apparently did exist, no identity was ever given to her.

Shanna Riley/FlickrLegends say that Louisiana’s Myrtles Plantation has long been haunted, from its Indian burial ground to the 1871 murder of William Winter to the infamous ghost known as Chloe. Our journey from New Jersey to Myrtle Beach was well planned over a significant period of time. We are so glad to have worked with with Tom, Paula and their team.

Regardless, someone repeated this story of the Williams' family ghost to Marjorie Munson and she soon penned a song about the ghost of the Myrtles, a woman in a green beret. The only verifiable murder to occur at the Myrtles was that of William Drew Winter and it differs wildly from the legends that have been told. As described previously, Winter was lured out of the house by a rider, who shot him to death on the porch. In the legend, Winter was shot and then, mortally wounded, staggered back into the house, passed through the gentlemen's parlor and the ladies’ parlor and onto the staircase that rises from the central hallway.

When he came in 1810, the Feliciana parish residents revolted against the Spanish troops in Baton Rouge. After overthrowing the Spanish, they established a new nation with St. Francisville as its capital. The area stretched eastward from the Mississippi River to the Perdido River, close to Mobile. In August 1791, Clark Woodrooff was born in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

Webber would be tried for killing Winter, but the case’s conclusion was never made public. Winter’s murderer is still unidentified and unpunished as of this writing. Moving the existing house’s walls made a formal dining room, a game room, and four spacious rooms that served as identical ladies’ and gentlemen’s parlors. Skilled craftsmen were also imported due to year-long visits to Europe to buy excellent furniture. Many forms featured elaborate plaster cornices that were fashioned from a combination of clay, Spanish moss, and cattle hair. The Stirling family required a home appropriate for their social level because they were respected well in the neighborhood.

Several individuals have reported unusual things around the residence. Many property owners have recently capitalized on the Myrtles Plantation’s notorious reputation, and the location is now accessible to visitors for tours and as a haunted bed & breakfast. The ghost wearing a green turban allegedly appeared to Frances Myers in 1987. She was asleep in one of the downstairs bedrooms when a black woman in a long dress and a green turban abruptly roused her. The story expanded significantly and was substantially enhanced during this time to include the poison murders and the severed ear. But up until this moment, it mainly had remained a local legend that had garnered little attention from outside the region.

It is reportedly a haunted place, and has been featured in television. The Myrtles Plantation has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. "They were part of a whole Creole community, free people of color, who were slaveowners and ran plantations," says Carolyn Brackett, a Project Manager for the National Historic Trust. "It's one of the fascinating things about that place, there are so many layers of history at Melrose. It takes a long time to sort them out."

While his wife was pregnant with their third child, he started an intimate relationship with one of his slaves. Injured during the Civil War, in which he served as a fifteen-year-old Confederate cavalry courier, Williams planted cotton and gained a reputation as a hard-working and industrious man. He and his family, which grew to include seven children, kept the Myrtles going during the hard times of the post-war South.

Possibly the most well known of the Myrtles' supposed ghosts, Chloe (or Cloe)[5] was reportedly a slave owned by Clark and Sara Woodruff. After being caught, either by Clark or Sara Woodruff, one of her ears was cut off, and she wore a green turban to hide it. In 1823, she, unfortunately, passed away from yellow fever, according to historical accounts.

He was given the pardon for his assistance in establishing a boundary line, known historically as “Ellicott’s Line,” between Spain and the United States. It was a simple check of historical records that revealed the real story. The true story of the Myrtles may not be as glamorous as the story presented by the staff at the plantation, but it is certainly strange. The history of the plantation is filled with death, tragedy and despair, leading us to wonder why a fanciful history was created in its place. Louis's own stint as a plantation owner started when he was granted 911 acres from his mother in 1795, land that was initially acquired as part of a grant from the Spanish crown. The Africa House, which was likely built by a slave he purchased in 1809, came next, made of bricks hand-pressed on site.

A portion of the film was shot at the Myrtles and it was an experience that the cast and crew would not soon forget. One day, the crew moved the furniture in the game room and the dining room for filming and then left. When they returned, they reported that the furniture had all been moved back to its original position.

The deliciously entrenched tale behind Napoleon House Entertainment Life

That grocery was first rented and then purchased by Joseph Impastato, who in 1920 opened a tavern in a side room. It evolved over the years, and in 2015, the restaurant was purchased by the Brennan family, which runs it today. It wasn’t until 1821 that the plot allegedly hatched seven years earlier was finally set into motion, according to most versions.

National Trust for Historic Preservation

Owned and operated by the Impastato family since 1914 and Ralph Brennan since May of 2015, Napoleon House suspends you in time. Listen to Beethoven's Eroiqua, which he composed for Napoleon, and the music of other classical masters, while sipping a Pimm's Cup, and basking in an ambiance that could only be New Orleans. "It just feels like our city together, even though we both loved it individually," Hendricks said. The Napoleon House was the couple's ideal wedding ceremony location because of its rustic European aesthetic, Hendricks said.

The Napoleon House offers one of the most unique and elegant settings anywhere for parties and receptions. The property is rated among the highest historically significant locations in New Orleans, and is on the National Register of historic buildings. Uncle Joe Impastato, the visionary founder of Napoleon House, had a discerning palate that leaned away from potent alcoholic beverages. Acquainted with Pimm's Cup during his travels in England—a refreshing, low-alcohol libation perfect for summer—he introduced it to Napoleon House. As a trailblazer, Napoleon House proudly became the first establishment in America to offer Pimm's Cups, surpassing global sales records, second only to the historic London bar that birthed this iconic drink. Obviously the One makes for a great party pad, doubly so because it has its own in-house night club.

Joseph “Uncle Joe” Impastato, who originally rented the property in 1914 before purchasing it in 1920, was an Italian immigrant who had a love for family, food, and opera. Over the years, the property transitioned from a residence to a variety of commercial uses. In 1914, it was purchased by the Impastato family, and under the ownership of J.

That’s very important historically and that’s why this building is a national historic landmark which counts as only the ninth in the French Quarter. It became even more obvious that he was popular amongst the local French Creoles who were the majority of the residents in the city and viewed him as a hero for his involvement in the Battle of New Orleans. Napoleon House, located in the French Quarter of New Orleans, boasts a rich history dating back to the early 19th century.

He dozes off mid-conversation, putting the “nap” in “Napoleon.” He treats his troops abominably, whether he’s deserting them in Egypt, condemning them to a death march through a Russian winter or sending them into the hopeless onslaught of Waterloo. He cheats on his cheating wife and over-indulges his appetites (“Destiny has brought me this lamb chop!” he declares, in one of the line readings of the year). The movie’s most meaningful recurring image is not of Napoleon commanding his troops, but rather of Napoleon gorging himself on food and drink, often at diplomatic meetings with foreign frenemies like Alexander I (Édouard Philipponnat) or Francis I (Miles Jupp). Attached to a two-story structure his brother had built, Girod’s new building stood three stories.

“We call it the philanthropy wing because it’s similar to something in the Pritzker Estate where they host thousands of people for charity events,” says Rayni Williams. The sprawling mansion is the brainchild of developer and former film producer Niami, who commissioned renowned Los Angeles architect Paul McClean to execute the larger-than-life project. Last October the property filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, so instead of listing for $500 million as was originally planned, it ended up hitting the auction block for $295 million.

Its patrons can still expect a soundtrack of classicalmusic and the best muffulettas in town, as well as the same warm welcome first inspiredby Napoleon, and practiced here ever since. In 2015, Ralph Brennan, whose family is a longstanding institution of New Orleans hospitality, accepted stewardship of Napoleon House from the Impastato family [its owners for the previous century,] declaring his intention to maintain its relaxed and antiquated character. Its patrons can still expect a soundtrack of classical music and the best muffulettas in town, as well as the same warm welcome first inspired by Napoleon, and practiced here ever since. After Girod resigned as mayor in September 1815, he took over the existing estate at Chartres and St. Louis, building it into the three-and-a-half story Creole cottage, complete with a cupola. The structure functioned as both a home and store (on the ground level) and remained in Girod’s family until the end of the 19th century. Scott knows that people are awful in pretty much every era, and Phoenix’s Napoleon, of course, is a prime example.

Girod died some years later, in 1840, in the house at 500 Chartres. It changed hands repeatedly over the years, with its ground floor becoming home to an Italian grocery just after the turn of the 20th century. True, Girod was mayor in January 1815 when Lafitte helped defend the city against the British in the Battle of New Orleans, and so it’s possible the two Frenchmen felt a kinship.

She added that  the couple  fell in love with the historic venue's old charm, from the dilapidated walls to the grand dining rooms. Muffuletta is the quintessential New Orleans sandwich and a Napoleon House signature that pays homage to the Italian immigrants who first opened grocery and deli stores along the riverfront of the French Market in New Orleans. It is a hearty sandwich of cured meats and cheese, slathered with a tangy olive salad dressing piled onto a sesame-crusted Italian loaf. The muffuletta is heated to intensify the flavors of the ingredients.

Funnily enough, though, his “Napoleon” might have actually benefited from a bit more fuss, a lot more political-historical insight and a less constipated visual style. (Scott’s stormy grays, muddy browns and sunburnt ochres are getting oppressive in their digital dreariness.) Its glimmers of comic rage and generous helpings of battlefield carnage, though patchily entertaining on their own, never coalesce into a coherent reason for being. Renowned for its iconic Warm Muffuletta (most serve theirs cold), a symphony of cured meats, tangy olive salad, and sesame-studded bread, all made in house, the establishment pays homage to the city's vibrant flavors. Beyond this signature delight, the menu features a delectable array of Creole and Cajun-inspired dishes, from Seafood Gumbo to flavorful Red Beans and Rice and Jambalaya. According to the website for the Napoleon House restaurant — which occupies the first floor and is famous in its own right for its Pimm’s Cup cocktail and its warm muffuletta sandwich — it was in 1814 that Girod first offered his house as a refuge for Napoleon. You can enjoy delicious food and drink surrounded by pictures of Napoleon and memorabilia related to the building’s history.
